How To Find The Best Nursing Colleges
If you are looking for a new career in the various fields of nursing, there are many accredited nursing colleges from which to choose. Over the last decade or so, there has been a high demand for nurses and though many have decided in favor of this career, the job market is still in desperate need of qualified nurses.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics an astounding one million replacement nurses, as well as new nurses, will need to be employed by 2012 alone, making a registered nurse one of most highly sought after professionals in the field of medicine and the leading occupation in overall job growth.
Starting your nursing career is as easy as finding the college of your choice, and if needed, the financial aid assistance required for tuition costs. Below we will look at some of the important factors that will help you find the right nursing school for you.
Location, Location, Location
Within your location, what nursing colleges and programs do you have available to you? Travel expenses should be considered in your overall financial picture because travel expenses can have a major impact on your overall learning experience. If the type of schooling you require isn’t available through the nursing colleges in your area, are you willing to relocate to a different area thus allowing you to attend school?
Is the School Accredited?
In order to choose a good school, look for those schools accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission and/or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing and Education. Only those schools who have been accredited have met the high standards set by these two organizations. Colleges may have accreditation with one or both of these organizations.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Very few men or women can afford the tuition costs of nursing school and financial aid will most likely be needed. Financial aid programs can vary greatly between different schools and smaller institutions will have different financial aid packages than those offered by larger colleges. Contact those schools you are considering attending and talk with a counselor about this issue.
Required Tests for Admission
While you are talking with the counselor about the financial aid packages they have available, ask them about the tests they require for admission into their particular school. These pre-admission tests are necessary for attendance and can vary depending on the school in question.
Clinical Rotation
Clinical rotation time is not only necessary to complete your coursework it is an essential element to solidifying your education. Again, this is a question to ask the counselor you are speaking with as well. Good questions to ask are what amount of time is spent in clinical rotation; are the placements varied so you can get the most from them, and do they provide enough practical hands-on experience. Do you know anyone who is a student at the school? If so, they could prove invaluable in answering this question as well.
NCLEX Exam and the Schools Pass Percentages
The answer to this question can shed much light on just how successful the school is in properly educating its students. Ask the counselor what their pass percentages are for those students who have taken the NCLEX exam.
Once you have the answers to these important questions, choosing from the many nursing colleges available will not only be an easier task, you will know what lies ahead of you as you make your way down your new career path. Remember, choosing the right school is the first step of your nursing career, giving you the confidence to succeed in your new endeavour as well as giving you the basic knowledge to build your success.
